There are
thousands of New Yorkers with psychiatric
disabilities in need of housing in the
community. Many people with mental illness
are homeless, in emergency rooms, in the
backwards of psychiatric centers, in
correctional facilities, in adult homes or
living with aging parents.
Providing
housing for these individuals would give
them a much better quality of life as well
as save the state money because community
based housing is much less expensive then
institutionalized settings. A housing
program like this would be both humane and
cost effective.
